Overview

Susana Alarico obtained her degree in Biology (1999) from the University of Aveiro (UA), Portugal. She spent the last year of her degree at the University of Liège, in Belgium, where she received training on Transmission Electron Microscopy and conducted a study leading to her "Mémoire". She completed her Master´s degree in Cell Biology (2003, Thesis Scientific Area: Microbiology) and her PhD in Biology, specialty in Microbiology (2009) both at the University of Coimbra (UC), Portugal.

From 2009 to 2019, she pursued post-doctoral research at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra (CNC-UC), particularly, focusing on a specific groups of bacteria: Thermophiles and the synthesis of compatible solutes, and Mycobacteria and their biosynthetic pathways as potential targets for new anti-tuberculosis therapies.

She currently holds a six-years contract as PhD Researcher (DL nº57/2016-SFRH/BPD/108299/2015, 2019-2024) at CNC-UC, integrated in the Center for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB R&D Unit, UC). She develops her research at the Molecular Microbiology and Microbiome group, where she leads different lines of research: Nontuberculous mycobacteria´ biology and adaptation to anthropogenic environments; Mycobacteriosis and new targets for innovative therapies and Human microbiome signatures of the dysbiotic gut in chronic diseases.

Susana Alarico has been an Invited Professor at the Nursing School of Coimbra (ESEnfC) since 2011, where she teaches the Curricular Unit - Clinical Microbiology. Additionally, she possesses teaching experience beyond the university setting, including working with high school students, adults, and in educators training (“Formação de Professores").

She has 14 years of experience as Supervisor and Co-Supervisor of graduate, MSc and PhD students either national or international.

Susana Alarico has 39 publications, 81% Q1 in Microbiology (13 as first author and 2 as corresponding author): 28 papers in International Peer Review Journals, 3 Book Chapters and 8 papers in Journals of International Scientific Meetings (conference papers) (h-index of 14, total citations 479 by 380 documents).

Her work has been presented in Inter/National Scientific Congresses and Meetings, but also at schools and other Institutions by invitation: oral communications in international Congresses and Scientific Meetings (as speaker, 8 out of 24), poster presentations (as 1st author, 14 out of 50), other oral communications presented abroad (19 as speaker)

She shares the Intellectual Property of two inventions:

Provisional Patent Application No. 117922 – “PLANT EXTRACTS to treat MYCOBACTERIAL INFECTIONS and uses thereof” and Provisional Patent Application No. N.º 119254 - "REAL-TIME BACTERIA DETECTION AND IDENTIFICATION DEVICE"

She has been invited to participate in collaborative projects to lead tasks due to her experience in clinical and molecular microbiology, bacteria taxonomy, antibacterial resistance and interspecies competition, enzymology, and human microbiome profiling studies associated with disease - a total of 27 projects funded: 21 projects with National Financial Support (e.g., FCT, Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa, Portuguese Society of Pneumology) and 6 projects with International Financial Support.

Since 2017, she has been one of the 5 Promoters of the translational project TimeUp. In 2018, the project received an Honourable mention from ARRISCA C, 10th Edition (Business Idea Typology), and successfully secured funding in the following years: in 2018 from Prototransfer/INESPO III; in 2019 from EIT Health Innostars Awards and Caixa Impulse/”la Caixa” Foundation and in 2023 from Call INNOV ID, 3rd Edition, Portugal Ventures. 

Susana Alarico is Co-Founder of the TIMEUP, Lda. Health Technologies, Legal Entity: 517635232 / Social Security Identification Number:25176352329. TIMEUP, Lda. is a spin-off generated at the University of Coimbra.

Susana Alarico integrates the team of project ICATE (Infection Control Awareness Through Education, certificated by PEA UNESCO), which promotes basic education on health for all to fight HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis spread. ICATE is a Societal and Science Communication project supported by a multidisciplinary team of volunteers and coordinated by the non-profit Association AWISHE – Association for World Innovation in Science and Health Education - where she is the Vice-President and Coordinator of the Tuberculosis Branch (www.awishe.com). The team of project ICATE has published pedagogical materials such as manuals and digital apps and Susana Alarico has presented her theme at both International and national meetings and conferences.
