The 8th edition of the Synapse European Meeting will take place on the 20th and 21st of October (Thursday and Friday), at the Convento São Francisco (Coimbra), this year co-organized by the Center for Neurosciences and Cell Biology of the University of Coimbra ( CNC-UC) and by the João Lobo Antunes Institute of Molecular Medicine of the University of Lisbon (IMM-UL). The meeting will bring together neuroscientists from several European and non-European countries, who are dedicated to the study of synapses (the communication structures between neurons, the brain cells) in the healthy and the diseased brain, with the aim of sharing ideas and generating greater understanding about the exchange of information in the brain.

The scientific event will feature lectures led by prestigious neuroscientists, including Gordon Fishell, from Harvard Medical School (United States of America), and Rosa Cossart, from the Institut de Neurobiologie de la Méditerranée (France). The program also includes other lectures and poster presentations, as well as various moments of socialization, with the aim of promoting contact between the various researchers present.

Ana Luísa Carvalho, president of the organizing committee, researcher at the CNC-UC and professor at the Department of Life Sciences of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the UC (DCV/FCTUC) explains that “the meeting brings together in Coimbra, scientists interested in understanding the exchange of information between brain cells (at the synapse), how this process contributes to the storage of information in the brain and how it underlies behaviors.” The researcher adds that “alterations in brain communication, therefore, in synapses, are at the basis of neuropsychiatric diseases”, another topic addressed at this meeting that aims to be “a moment of presentation of new ideas and discussion, in an area of Neurosciences in great evolution”.
