Aim

The goal of the PDBEB Advanced Course in Neuroscience is to provide an integrated view into both the physiological processes of neuronal synapses and circuits, and their dysfunction in neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases. In tandem with theoretical courses taught by international experts in the field, these advanced courses will include multiple intensive practical workshops. Students will attend theoretical and methodological lectures during the morning, and spend the afternoon performing hands-on projects in groups of 2-3 students.

In module 3 on Pathogenic Mechanisms in Neuropsychiatric and Neurodegenerative Disorders, the following topics will be addressed:

- Live cell imaging of mitochondrial cellular transfer
- Determination of mitochondria-endoplasmic reticulum contacts
- Imaging neurite mitochondrial movement
- Transcriptional factor activity determination (luciferase luminesce and real time RT-qPCR)
- Mitochondrial function (Seahorse analyzer and fluorimetric assays)
- Lipid droplets autophagic degradation (fluorescence microscopy and western blot)
- Glymphatic protein clearance (bioluminescence and fluorescence microscopy)

Experimental projects include:

P3.1. Measuring mitochondria transfer in neuron-microglia co-cultures (Ana Raquel Santos & Sandra M Cardoso).

P3.2. Structural and functional analysis of mitochondria-endoplasmic reticulum contacts in neuropsychiatric disorders (Rosa Resende).

P3.3. Mitochondrial dynamics and function in Huntington’s disease (Ana Cristina Rego & Daniela Marinho).

P3.4. The Nrf2-ARE-related pathway in Alzheimer’s Disease (Ildete Luísa Ferreira).

P3.5. miRNA deregulation in Parkinson’s Disease (Ana Raquel Esteves)

P3.6. Autophagic degradation of lipid droplets in Alzheimer’s Disease (Cláudia F Pereira & Tânia Fernandes).

P3.7. Role of astrocytes in protein clearance mediated by aquaporin 4 in Alzheimer’s Disease-like conditions (Liliana Dias & Paula Agostinho).

P3.8 Pharmacological manipulation of fear extinction (Gianluca Masella, Francisca Silva & Mónica Santos).
