Jude Samulsky visits CNC-UC

16/06/2025

We were honored to welcome Jude Samulski, a world-renowned pioneer in gene therapy and ERA Chair holder for the European project GCure – From Gene to Cure, to CNC-UC.

Jude Samulski was the first scientist to demonstrate that adeno-associated virus (AAV) could be used as a vector for gene therapy — a breakthrough that laid the foundation for several of today’s approved treatments for rare genetic diseases.

As part of GCure, funded by the European Commission’s ERA Chair programme, Samulski’s visit strengthens Coimbra University ambition to become a European reference hub for research and innovation in gene and cell therapies for central nervous system disorders.

This visit reinforces the international scope of GeneT, Gene Therapy Center of Excellence Portugal at the University of Coimbra, and reflects the growing impact of GCure in building scientific excellence and future-ready innovation.
