mitoCIN - Development of mitochondrial antioxidants based on cinnamic acid

Overview

Project Summary

This project finances the territorial expansion of an International Patent application to key markets such as the USA, Europe, China, Canada, Brazil, South Korea, and Japan to protect our technology and its uses. The technology refers to the design and development of new hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives that work as antioxidants with a direct effect on the mitochondria. These compounds are perfect candidates for replacing traditional antioxidants in a series of applications where the latter have no or very low effectiveness, such as in the cosmetics area, as active ingredients for anti-ageing cosmetic products, and in the human health area, as active principles of drugs for the treatment of the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.
Applications for entry into the national/regional phases of the international patent application “Hydroxycinnamic derivatives, methods and uses thereof” were made in China, Brazil, Canada, Europe, USA, South Korea, and Japan through the consultancy provided by the company Patentree.
The international patent application “Hydroxycinnamic derivatives, methods and uses thereof” concluded the period of entry into the national/regional phases in China, Brazil, Canada, Europe, the USA, South Korea and Japan. This application will now be evaluated in these territories towards granting the patent.
The MitoCIN project is promoted by CNC and aims at the internationalization of the patent “Hydroxycinnamic derivatives, methods and uses thereof” (provisional application number 109680 from 14/10/2016) with expansion in several regions, referring to the design and development of new hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives that work as antioxidants with a direct effect on the mitochondria.

Main Goals

The mitoCIN project is coordinated by CNC towards the internationalization of the provisional patent application number 109680, entitled “Hydrocinnamic derivatives: methods and applications”, based on the design and development of new hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives with antioxidant potential and modified to have a protective action on cellular mitochondria.
