Dr. Barger graduated from Hendrix College (Conway, Arkansas) as the Spessard Biology Award recipient and then obtained a Ph.D. in Cell Biology from Vanderbilt University.  He trained as a postdoctoral scholar at the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging at the University of Kentucky, where he received three research fellowships.  His first faculty position was concomitant with being named the Inglewood Fellow for Alzheimer's Research at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, where he is currently the Louise G. Hearn Chair in Dementia & Long-Term Care, Professor of Geriatrics, and Professor of Neurobiology & Developmental Sciences.  In 2010, Dr. Barger was awarded the Odyssey Medal for Research from Hendrix College, and in 2014, he was appointed to the Alzheimer’s Disease Advisory Board for the Arkansas General Assembly.  He is Senior Editor at the journal Neurobiology of Aging and Deputy Chief Editor for the Journal of Neurochemistry.  Dr. Barger has played a significant role in the UAMS Graduate School and currently advises two Ph.D. students and two postdocs.
