Manuela Grazina, researcher at CNC-UC and CiBB, Director of the Laboratory of Mitochondrial and Theranostic Biomedicine, and Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, participated as an invited expert in the International Meeting on the Implementation of Pharmacogenetics and Personalized Medicine in Ibero-America, held on 18–19 June 2026 in Badajoz, Spain.
In recognition of her scientific and academic expertise, Manuela Grazina was appointed official rapporteur for the meeting alongside Professor Marta Sosa Macías from the National Polytechnic Institute of Mexico. Together, they were responsible for compiling the main conclusions and recommendations emerging from the scientific sessions and the network's strategic meetings.
Organised by the Ibero-American Network of Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomics (RIBEF), the meeting brought together experts, researchers, clinicians, and policymakers from twelve countries to discuss strategies for implementing personalized medicine and pharmacogenetics within healthcare systems, as well as the development of international research and training initiatives.
The University of Coimbra researcher also co-chaired the International Symposium "Ethnicity, Ancestry and Medicines: Clinical Implementation of Pharmacogenetics in Ibero-American Populations", which brought together specialists from Mexico, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Brazil, and Spain to discuss the impact of genetic diversity on drug response and the challenges of implementing pharmacogenetics in clinical practice across different populations.
In her closing remarks, she highlighted the importance of Ibero-American scientific collaboration in translating genomic knowledge into tangible benefits for patients, arguing that the genetic diversity of populations should be regarded as an opportunity to develop more precise, safer, and more personalized healthcare.
During the RIBEF Coordination Meeting, which marked the network's 20th anniversary, Manuela Grazina participated in discussions on new strategies for research, advanced training, and international collaboration for the 2027–2030 period. She also contributed to defining the network's future strategic priorities by presenting innovative proposals that were positively received by participants and may become part of future international initiatives in research, education, and the implementation of personalized medicine.
With more than three decades of scientific activity, Manuela Grazina has directed the University of Coimbra's Laboratory of Mitochondrial and Theranostic Biomedicine since 1995. For the past 17 years, she has also coordinated advanced training in pharmacogenomics within the PhD Programme in Health Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, contributing to the education and training of healthcare professionals and researchers in this emerging field of precision medicine.
The Portuguese participation reinforced the role of the University of Coimbra and Portuguese research within international networks shaping the future of pharmacogenetics and personalized medicine—fields widely regarded as essential for improving therapeutic effectiveness, reducing adverse drug reactions, and promoting more individualized healthcare.
