Research challenges under debate at BEB Day 2023

02/02/2023

Next Tuesday, another edition of BEB Day begins, a symposium promoted by the Doctoral Program of Experimental Biology and Biomedicine (PDBEB) of the Institute of Interdisciplinary Research of the University of Coimbra (iiiUC). The initiative will take place between the 7th and 8th of February in the auditorium of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (Polo II of the University of Coimbra). The event is organized by students of the Experimental Biology and Biomedicine program (PDBEB) and will be dedicated to the current science challenges, from the search for financial support to science communication, with the theme “Science Challenges: This fight of ours”.

BEB Day 2023 intends to create an arena for discussion about the challenges that science faces nowadays, such as: the continuous search for funding, mental health in academia, the duality of cooperation and competition in academia, science communication for different audiences and also the challenges related to clinical trials – tests that allow transferring the science carried out in the laboratory, in a safe and effective way, to people.

In addition to lectures, the first day of the meeting will feature a round table entitled "Main Challenges of Science and How to fight them!". The second day begins with the testimonies of two former PDBEB students, followed by a poster session supported by ©LabOrders, and selected oral presentations supported by ©Type Solution. Chaperone, an online career support platform personalized for scientists, will also award two career counseling sessions to the best Graphical Abstract. The scientific meeting ends with a moment of greater relaxation with the “Beer Hour”, and a dinner, which will promote contact and sharing of experiences between students and guests.

The Doctoral Program of Experimental Biology and Biomedicine was created in 2002, integrating the training offer of the Interdisciplinary Research Institute of the University of Coimbra (iiiUC), being coordinated by the Center for Neurosciences and Cellular Biology of the University of Coimbra (CNC-UC). In its twenty editions, it has trained dozens of researchers, academics, entrepreneurs and science communicators in the field of biomedicine.

BEB Day 2023 has the institutional support of the CNC-UC, the Center for Innovation in Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB) and the iiiUC, and with the support of Crioestaminal, the Institute of Education and Citizenship, STABVIDA, PontoMarc and the Waferland. The organizing committee for this edition is made up of students Ana Vasconcelos, Rafaela Ferrão, João Novo, Maria Cristo, Frederico Pena and Débora Mena and is coordinated by CNC-UC researcher Nuno Empadinhas.
